World Wide Web (WWW) is a network of computers. It is a public network. Computers use Hyper Text Transfer Protocol (HTTP) to communicate with each other. HTTP is a set of rules for communication. There is a secure version of HTTP called HTTPS (S for Secure). Information is stored in web pages and these web pages must be placed to some publicly accessible computer. This computer is called web server. To read the pages, we use web clients. These web clients are application software called browsers. Firefox (FF) and Internet Explorer (IE) are the most widely used web browsers.
The first step for your web presence is choosing a domain name. All hosting company web sites provide domain name search facility to choose a domain. Once you choose a domain using this facility then you need to register this domain to your name. Web hosting company registers your domain with some domain registrar and sends you information. You register a domain and then renew it on annual basis. After choosing the domain name, you must buy hosting from a web hosting company. This means you need online disk space to upload the web site. People use your domain name (http://www.yourdomain.com) to point to your website. Hosting company sends you detailed information on how to place your web pages to the web server. Once your pages are up on some server, you are live and people can visit your website.
You need a browser to visit a website. Browser sends HTTP request to the server to fetch a page and server responds the page containing set of tags called Hyper Text Markup Language (HTML). Browser displays the information inside these set of tags. The server may also query to some web database using Structured Query Language (SQL). For example, if user needs some news then web server sends query to the database and then place the information inside HTML tags and sends the information back to web browser.
You must place your web pages to some public computer. This is called publishing to the world. File Transfer Protocol (FTP) is used to send web pages to the server. This is commonly called uploading web site to the web server. You need IP address of the server, user name and password. You need FTP client software to upload the web site. Commonly used FTP software are FileZilla, WS_FTP and CuteFTP. You enter the FTP information of a website to FTP client and use connecting facility to connect to the server. Once connected, you can upload the webs pages to the server.
