What is Nameserver?

Domain Name Servers are like a phonebook for internet which have complete record of all the domain names convert them to Internet Protocol (IP) addresses. This conversion is important for computers as they access a website through IP addresses. All of this information from DNSs are placed at Central Registry.Web hosting companies and internet service providers regularly check this Central Registry for updates.

DNS keeps a record mapping files which have domain names and corresponding IP addresses. There are different types of DNS records:

A – Address

Address records are the most vital for Domain name server as they connect the domain name to its IP address. Without these, conversion of IP address to domain name is not possible. Address record of a www version of your domain name is also important.

CNAME – Canonical Name

Canonical literally means the actual one as these records are used as an alias for another. With CNAME, servers can use one or more hostnames. Actually, they redirect the actual domain name to others and multiple hostnames point towards the Address record.

MX – Mail Exchange

These records point out the mail server which receives emails on behalf of a specific domain. There are assigned to number to these MX and the server with the lowest MX priority is accessed first but if that does not respond then the next lowest MX priority is tried.

TTL – Time to Live

Time to Live or TTL is assigned to every DNS record. It is the time period for which a cached data will be available on a DNS server. When you set its value to zero no data will be cached at all. This is also the time the DNS take to make changes. For example, TTL of 86400 means DNS will take 24 hours to show any changes. Its unit is second. You can also change TTL but mostly DNS have limitations on minimum TTL.
